Campbeltown Lost Distilleries H-Z
Campbeltown Lost Distilleries H-Z
Text at work ..... It is a tragedy. In Campbeltown on Kintyre 33 distilleries were once whisky-making. „In its glorious days, there were two dozens or more distilleries in operation,“ writes Brian Townsend. The whisky chronicler of the U.K., Alfred Barnard, reports of 20 still operating distilleries in 1885. After World War I some of them reopened but by 1930 they died to only three distilleries.
David Stirk published a detailed account of Campbeltown‘s whisky history and its lost distilleries:
The Distilleries of Campeltown. The Rise and Fall of the Whisky Capital of the World. Glasgow 2005. His book contains many original sources, letters, newspaper articles and a full copy of Alfred Barnards description of the Campbeltown distilleries. Very recommendable.
