Ernie was born in Austria, raised in Germany, educated in France and Scotland. He studied literature, linguistics and politics at the Universities of Mainz and of Edinburgh. 

For more than thirty years he was a manager in adult education in Germany.

He has travelled Scotland since his teenage days and guided more than 70 parties to Scotland and Ireland.

Ernie also tutors whisky distillation and organizes tasting courses with visual presentations at various adult education centres or clubs in Germany. He also organizes special Whisky-KulTours to the sources of the Water of Life.

Ernie has contributed background articles about whisky to magazines like Das Irland Journal, The Highland Herold and to blogs like whisky-experts, Whiskyfanblog and whisky-intelligence.

He loves hiking in the Glencoe area and still enjoys race and mountain biking.
