Blair athol plain of the new Ireland

The distillery in Pitlochry is well visited by coach parties as it nests in a tourist hot spot. It received its licence in 1825 and was established in 1798.  It is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Blair Athol was rebuilt in 1949 and extended in 1973 to four stills. The production volume per year is about 2.500.000 litres of spirit. There are five bonded warehouses on site.

Most of its production is tankered away down South to Cambus or Leven. Blair Athol contributes largely to the blend Bell‘s, see www.bells.co.uk, which is one of the top ten Scottish blended whiskies and was introduced as an alternative to the more expensive Johnnie Walker range by Diageo. In 2010 a major refurbishment took place, four wooden and four stainless steel washbacks were replaced by stainless steel washbacks only.

Character: fruity, sweet, citrus, orange, some spicy and nutty aromas

There is a welcoming visitor centre with a very good historic display. Very qualified and enthusiastic guides (2011).
