Situated in Stirlingshire this distillery is owned by an independent distiller Ian Macleod Ltd. „The Glen of the wild geese“ as it is called in Gaelic. Glengoyne lies on the Highland Line, the water is from the Highlands and the spirit is distilled there matures in warehouses across the A 81 road in the Lowlands. In 1833 the distillery was licensed under the name Burnfoot Distilleries.
The founder George Connell named his distillery Burnfoot of Dumgoyne. Other names are Glen Guin or Glenguin, the old spelling. In 1905 it was named Glengyone. One wash still supplies two spirit stills, the distillation regime is among the slowest in the Scottish whisky industry. The annual production capacity is 1.2 million litres. In 2013 about 920,000 LPA were distilled, 80% goes into blending and 20% into malt bottling (figures are sloghtly changing as Glengoyne Malts get more and more poular).
An unaged single malt called Burnfoot was released in 2008 and is available in dutyfree shops.
There is a small visitor centre offering various tours from the 45 minute Glengoyne Tour for tourists to the five hour Masterclass where you can create your own blend.
More than 50.000 visitors have been counted in 2013. Booking is essential to avoid waiting.
A brand new shop and visitor centre were opened in October, 2011.
