Glenturret the glen of the little stream

This „cosy“ distillery was founded officially in 1775 and therefore is possibly the oldest working distillery of Scotland, its origin dates back to 1717 when the Hosh Distillery was established. It is also one of the smallest commercially working Scottish distilleries. However, it is well visited by coach parties. Tours are every twenty minutes, and they are very recommended.

The soft water comes from Loch Turret to produce about 189.000 litres of new make per year. Glenturret malt is very much underrated as it contributes mainly to the blend of The Famous Grouse, which is the number one in the U.K.  The open stainless steel mash tun is the only one in Scotland turned manually by the mashman with a large wooden spade. This is absolutely unique in the industry and is a very good example of the period before semi and full lauter tuns.

Peated whisky had been distilled before 2009 as a replacement for the Islay peated type of malt which was needed not only for The Black Grouse but also for other Edrington blends. The annual production of new make is about 156.000 litres at 100% A.B.V. The filling strength is 69.8 % A.B.V.  About 11.000 casks are maturing whisky in six warehouses across the road. During a day you may experience yourself the making of whisky at the Glenturret Whisky School.

In August 2011 a Whisky & Music Festival was held for the first time.

There is a welcoming visitor centre, The Famous Grouse Experience. There is also a cook and whisky school.
