Badbea  The Clearance Village

Life on the coast

Records show that people were living at Badbea from 1793 onwards. Most families arrived there in 1802. They came from the nearby Langwell Estate.

The owner Sir John Sinclair of Uibster „improved“ his agricultural farming methods. He introduced sheep farming therefore he moved away the people who had been working and living in the glens for generations.

He cleared the land forcefully to make way for sheep.

People also came from other glens like Kildonan, near Helmsdale, to adjoining Auchnacraig.

There was some illicit distilling at Badbea.
