Isle of Arran

Founder of the only existing distillery on the Isle of Arran was Harold Currie, a former Managing Director of Chivas Brothers and House of Campbell. It was the first distillery on the island to be opened for more than 150 years after the last legal distillery closed in 1832. Arran was full of illicit distilleries in those days.

Opened in 1995 the modern distillery is situated in the north of Arran near Lochranza. The famous master blender Harold Currie‘s dream came true when the first distillery manager Gordon Mitchell produced the new make spirit. The construction of the distillery was delayed and retarded by an Golden Eagle‘s nest nearby the new distillery. Hence the eagle is found as an emblem the labels of Arran Single Malt bottles.

The production capacity is 750,000 litres. There are three warehouses on site, two dunnage and one new palletized. Blends produced by Arran Distillers are Glen Rosa, Island Prince, Loch Ranza and Royal Island. During the first years these blends bridged the income when the malts were still maturing and not ready for bottling. The existing capacity will be doubled to 1.2 million litres it was announced in October 2016.

A modern well designed visitor centre and a restaurant welcome the whisky enthusiast. The visitor centre was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997. The guides are well trained and very passionate.
