India
There are quite a few distilleries in India, most of them are neutral or industrial alcohol distilleries. India is the largest whisky market in the world. Most of the whiskies produced as Indian Foreign Made Liquor are made of neutral spirit from molasses, plus colouring E150a and artificial flavourings.
There are malt distilleries:
-Amrut Distilleries in Bengaluru, Karnataka
-John Distilleries in Goa
-Kasauli Distillery, Mohan Meakin Ltd., Shimla
- Ponda Distillery, Goa
-Rampur Distillery, Radico Kaitan, Gurgaon
- Sikkim, Rangpo
The world‘s no. 1 whisky brand is from India: Officer‘s Choice with 30,2 million 9-litre cases sold in 2014. Scotland‘s best selling brand Johnnie Walker sold 17.9 million 9-litre cases world wide in 2014.
However, Officer‘s Choice is not a traditional blend of grain and malt whiskies like Johnnie Walker but a blend of neutral molasses spirits and malt spirits with additional colouring and artificial flavouring substances.
Therefore, it cannot be traded in the EU and the U.S. as Officer‘s Choice does not meet the standards set by the European (as well as Scottish) and American Whisk(e)y Regulations.
In February 2018 there will be a Whisky Kultour from Germany to India. Please see for further details in the section Tours Reisen on this website.
