Auchentoshan    the corner of the field

This distillery in the North of Glasgow is famous for its triple distillation. However, it is not the only distillery in Scotland to process a triple distillation. This mainly to Ireland related distillation process was common in the 19th century, especially in the Lowlands, as Irish Whiskey was selling well during those years. The extra distillation with the intermediate still produces in the end of the distilling process a spirit strength of around 81% A.B.V.

During the Second World War the Auchentoshan Distillery was heavily bombed and had to be rebuild. Today, the cooling water is kept in a bomb crater from the Second World War.

Licenced in 1823 Auchentoshan Distillery produced in 2010 about 600.000 litres spirit (capacity is 1.75 million litres) and in 2011 production increased to about 1.200.000 litres of new make spirit and in 2014 to 1.700.00 LPA. Almost all of its production goes into single malt bottling. The water comes from the water reservoir Loch Katrine in the Trossachs and the cooling water from a pond near the distillery.

In 2008 new designer bottles and new expressions were released which correspond to the state of the art visitor centre. The First Auchentoshan Whiskyfestival was held in August 2009 when the first triple conditioned real ale, the Auchentoshan Summer Gold with 6.4% A.B.V. was released for the first time by the then Distillery Manager Jeremy Stephens who was a former brewer himself (only available during festival). Further festivals were held in 2010 and 2012 (see:www.auchentoshanfestival.com).

Jeremy Stephens, former head distiller at Auchentoshan, replaced Iain McCallum as Senior Blender for Morrison Bowmore in 2011. Iain McCallum was appointed Master of Malts, „taking on a global educational role within the sales and marketing team covering all key markets.“ (see Scotland Food and Drink)
