The former Master Distiller of Macallan and Marketing Manager of Edrington, David Roberston, who also worked with Whyte & MacKay as Rare Whisky Director is planning to set up a whisky distillery in Scotland‘s capital Edinburgh. The prospected „Boutique Micro Distillery“ will be housed in an historic Engine Shed at St.Leonard‘s Hill near Holyrood Park.

The £2m project aims to distil 100,000 litres of alcohol per year which makes for about 250,000 bottles of single malt.

“We hope to be able to create an immersive and entertaining visitor experience, supporting the local economy through jobs and training opportunities, while reinforcing the capital’s position as a world class tourism destination,“ David Roberston said.

City of Edinburgh Council have approved a building application to develop the former Engine Shed building and site on St Leonard’s Lane into a distillery and visitor centre in August 2016.

The Glen Sciennes Distillery, located in the nearby Newington area, was the last Edinburgh single malt distillery which closed its doors in 1925. Its malt barns where situated near the Edinburgh & Dalkeith railway warehouse.

There is still a grain distillery North British west of Dalry.

In August 2016 there were no activities going on.

Until spring 2015 it was used as a training centre for young people with learning disabilities. For 25 years the acclaimed cafe and bakery The Engine Shed had employed 30 young adults as a stepping stone into full employment.
