Balvenie the farm of Beathan
Balvenie the farm of Beathan
Established in 1892 the distillery is famous for its double wood single malts. Tradition counts, there is still a malting barn where floor malting is done, although only a small portion of the malt requirements are produced traditionally on site.
There are delicious whiskies for the Sherry fraction, fullbodied with some sweetness, vanilla and butter scotch. Its annual production volume is about 6.4 million litres of pure alcohol. Balvenie is next to its sister neighbours Kininvie and Glenfiddich. The Balvenie website is very informative and highly educational, see The Balvenie Whisky Academy and Warehouse 24. Tutorial films by experts of the Scottish whisky industry explain the production process of whisky.
Character: fullbodied, fruity, nutty, elegant
Balvenie offers excellent educational tours - with eight people only - which you have to book well in advance, they are only recommended for the malt enthusiast. A tour with David Mair is the absolute highlight in the whisky business. The „real-life-tour“ takes about three hours including floor maltings, kiln, tun room, still house, cooperage and warehouse and above all a tasting of several whiskies including a new make.
