cardhu  the black rock

The Spiritual Home of Johnnie Walker produces about 3.400.000 litres of spirit every year. Only a few litres are warehoused on site but most of the new make is tankered away down South to Cambus, Alloa. About 30% goes into single malt bottling. Cardhu is the biggest selling single malt of Diageo. About 3 million bottles were sold in 2010. After being sold as a blended malt for about two years Cardhu was back again as a 12 year Single Malt in 2004. Most of the production goes into Johnnie Walker Blends. Today, Cardhu is the best selling Single Malt of the Diageo range.

Cardhu was founded by the illicit distillers Helen and John Cumming in 1811. Legalized in 1824 the distillery was not well known during those days but with their daughter-in-law Elizabeth Cummings, The Queen of Whisky, the distillery was refurbished in 1884. The old pot stills were sold to Glenfiddich. The new single malt produced at Cardow was then called Car-Dhu, derived from Gaellic carraig dubh, the black rock. In 1893 the Walker Family of Kilmarnock bought the distillery, it was their first distillery aquisition. Cardhu had gained a reputation as avery good Scottish malt.

Today Cardhu plays a vital role for Johnnie Walker Blends. Seven day a week production is the result, day and night a light single malt is produced „...with green, grassy notes.“
