Roseisle Distillery
Roseisle Distillery
The latest state of the art distillery. Opened in 2010, completed in 2009, this MEGA-distillery is just like a modern cathedral. With its green energy saving systems it is the perfect example of modern distilling technology. CO2 emissions will be reduced and by-products will be recycled on site.
Two mash tuns and 14 stainless steel washbacks supply 14 potstills from Abercrombie to produce two different Speyside Malts. Two different types of shell-and-tube condenser-systems, one in copper and the other in stainless steel as well as different fermentation times produce alternatively two characters of new makes. One is the typical Speyside type which „lighter and fruitier“, the other „oilier and a bit heavier“. A maximum of copper contact cleans the alcohol vapours of sulfur compounds and has an lightening effect. A regular open resting of the potstills also prevents copper exhaustion and therefore generate a light Speyside style of new make just like that of Cardhu which is of the „green grassy“ type.
„It can currently produce two styles of malt, styles that Diageo refer to as ‘Speyside Light’ and ‘Speyside Heavy’. The differences between these is achieved mainly by different fermentation times and the use of stainless steel condensers versus copper worm tubs. 4 of the 14 stills have the option of switching from the more traditional copper worm tub condensers (the copper has a purifying, lightening effect on spirit) to stainless steel condensers which produce a heavier style.“ See www.RoyalMileWhisky.com
11.400.000 litres of spirit were produced in 2014.
Paul Walsh of CEO, Diageo plc. said at the official opening event in Autumn 2010: “Roseisle distillery is a great source of pride to everyone at Diageo. It gathers all the skill and knowledge we have built up over centuries in distilling whisky and combines it with the highest quality design possible, to create a stunning new distillery. It also uses cutting edge technology to significantly minimise our carbon footprint and impact on the environment.“
„Roseisle conserves energy and resources using a number of devices. Overheating in the still house is reduced with stack-effect natural ventilation. Air is introduced at low-level and expelled at high-level, and some hot air is recovered for use in the maltings. A water-reclamation plant, built by Dalkia, aims to recycle 300,000m³ of liquid produced by the distillery as potable water, thus helping to replenish its intake.“ The Architect‘s Journal, the home of British architecture.
„The distillery will produce one style of malt whisky - Speyside - which is the biggest component of all blended Scotch. The seven pairs of stills are medium sized and six have a mix of both copper and steel condensers (like Dailuaine); the option to reduce the proportion of copper contact results in a heavier Speyside malt (like that produced by worm tubs).
