Strathmill

The distillery in Keith was built in 1891 on the site of a corn mill next to the River Isla.

The character of its Single Malt is sweet and delicate, light and fruity, a bit oily and velvetly. The production was about 2.600.000 litres of spirit in 2014. Other names are Strathisla and Glenisla-Glenlivet.

The new make is tankered to Auchroisk and some casks are brought back to be stored in six warehouses on site. Strathmill Single Malt contributes to the world‘s fifths most sold blend J&B of which almost 9 million cases were sold in 2013.

In 1968 the number of pot stills was increased from two to four. The have the classic lantern shape and are heated by steam pans. The spirit distillation is complemented by two purifiers. The lighter spirit  which runs through the shell and tube condenser is collected whereas the heavier alcohols are redirected tthrough the purifiers (water cooled copper pots) which act as small condensers. This purified alcohol is redirected to the spirit still and distilled again to create a lighter sty of new make. About 1,800 litres of alcohol are thereby redistilled.

„We call it a two and a half distillation,“ describes Site Manager Andrew Nairn the process.
